     The Howrah Bridge   The Howrah Bridge on the river Hooghly is an example of modern engineering marvel . It is in fact a cantilever span bridge .  It is built on supports on both sides of and cantilevers spread out from those supports and are connected together in between.  Since there is no support in between the river, it does not get affected in respect of transportation . It has arms of different lengths.  One arm is 564 ft. long. Each of the two cantilever arms is 468 ft . long and each of the anchor arms is 325 ft. long . t was constructed with 27000 tons of tensile steel. The cost of the construction was Rs. 32 Lacs. The total length of the bridge is 2,150 ft.   It took 6 years to completed the construction . It is known as the fourth largest bridge in the world .  It was opened for public on 28th February , in the year 1943 . The Howrah Bridge is used to link Howrah ( and other parts of the country ) with Kolkata ....

                          KOLKATA

I believe that I cannot think and dream of staying in any other city except, Kolkata, the city which attracts all peoples. 

It has unique characteristics of its own. It is believed that it was founded by job Char-nock in the year 1690 A.D. 

It consisted of there little villages named Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kolkata, all located on the bank of the river hooghly. 

Kolkata had a glorious past which is worth-mentioning. It was the capital of India till 1911. 

Then West Bengal was regarded as the state which took the main role of every spheres of national life.


 Accordingly, the city excelled in the field of education, culture, business, and freedom movement. 

It was the most important and talked-about city. At present it is the fifth largest city in the world. The total area of the city is about 1500 sq.km 

and the population is more than ten millions. There are different modes of transport here. 

The circular rail makes the journey esey. But the metro rail made the journey easiest, most comfortable, most convenient 


and useful to the commuters. The people of Kolkata is peace-loving and they prefer peaceful co-existence. 

Kolkata is friendly to all people. There are congestion and pollution in the city. We must work to get rid of these problems to make it a better city.
