The Howrah Bridge The Howrah Bridge on the river Hooghly is an example of modern engineering marvel . It is in fact a cantilever span bridge . It is built on supports on both sides of and cantilevers spread out from those supports and are connected together in between. Since there is no support in between the river, it does not get affected in respect of transportation . It has arms of different lengths. One arm is 564 ft. long. Each of the two cantilever arms is 468 ft . long and each of the anchor arms is 325 ft. long . t was constructed with 27000 tons of tensile steel. The cost of the construction was Rs. 32 Lacs. The total length of the bridge is 2,150 ft. It took 6 years to completed the construction . It is known as the fourth largest bridge in the world .
